Sophie Jones has had more than her share of misfortune. Orphaned at a young age by a fatal car crash, her life has been the definition of tragedy, and every time she tries to move forward, her past drags her back. Her only solace is her chocolate shop, Chocolat’ de Soph, where she whips up tasty and dazzling confections. Channeling her misery, Sophie creates Misfortune Cookies, dipped in bitter chocolate and with enclosed handwritten messages like: “You will soon fall in love. Caution: when people fall, something usually breaks.” To her surprise, the cookies become a big hit with her customers.

When her ex, Garrett, walks into her store a year after breaking off their engagement and disappearing without an explanation, Sophie considers her rotten luck true to form. Now, he wants to set the record straight, but the sadder but wiser Sophie is not going to fall for his charm again. To put him off, she proposes that Garrett take out a want ad in the Seattle Times asking readers how to find happiness. If he gets a hundred responses she deems acceptable, she’ll go out with him one last time and hear what he has to say. She thinks he’ll never succeed, but she doesn’t anticipate his determination, the media interest that causes the ad to go viral, and the overwhelming and passionate responses from happiness seekers all over the country. Sophie may just have to concede that happiness is not always fleeting, and that the past is not always what it seems.
